This is an example of a Colt Pocket Model No. 2 Paterson revolver that was manufactured by Samuel Colt's Patent Arms Co., in Paterson, New Jersey, c. 1837-40. The revolver has a frame with capping cut-out five-shot round back cylinder, folding trigger and rounded walnut grip with beveled heels. The cylinder is roll engraved with the Centaur scene and the Colt four horse trademark. The top of the barrel is roll stamped in script letters "- Patent Arms Mg Co Paterson N-J Colt's Pt. - " reading towards the muzzle with the arrow motif at either end of the marking. The serial number "198" is stamped on the bottom of the wedge, inside of the frame strap, and on the rear face of the cylinder between the chambers. All of the visible serial numbers match. The revolver has a polished blue finish and varnished walnut grips. The barrel has a round nickel silver front sight and the hammer has a knurled spur. Manufactured for three years with a total production of approximately 800 pieces, the Pocket Model No. 2 Paterson Revolver is a rare and important piece in the evolution of Colt revolvers.

Good as partially refinished (barrel has had lug re-welded). The revolver retains traces of the blue finish overall. The barrel has a blue gray patina with traces of original blue in protected areas. The barrel edges are sharp and the legend is clear. There are a number of minute dents and scratches on the refinished barrel and lug and there is a small spot of shallow pitting on the right barrel flat adjacent to the legend. The barrel address has been re-engraved. The cylinder has a gray patina and retains most of the Centaur scene and Colt trademark. The percussion nipples are heavily flash-pitted; the front and rear faces of the cylinder have moderate-heavy flash pitting. The sides of the frame retain most of the original blue finish; the recoil shields have a brown patina. The recoil shields and sides of the hammer have some light flash pitting. The grips are very good and retain half of the original varnish finish. Most of the varnish wear is concentrated on the lower edges of the grips. This is a fine original example of a rare Colt Paterson Pocket Model No. 2 Percussion revolver.
