Description:

The included factory letter verifies the caliber, barrel length and finish with the type of stocks not listed. The revolver was shipped to Charles Hummel & Son, San Antonio, Texas, on April 10, 1891 as part of a 10 gun shipment. The barrel has the two line address on top and "COLT FRONTIER SIX SHOOTER" on the left side and the left side of the frame has the two line, three patent date marking with a circled Rampant Colt. The left side of the trigger guard is marked "44". Numbers match on the frame and grip straps. Fitted with pearl grips. The back strap is spuriously inscribed "Capt. J.R. Hughes". Capt. John Reynolds Hughes was a Texas Ranger from 1887 to 1915 and served mainly in the "Frontier Battalion" on the Mexico-U.S. border. After the 1893 murder of Texas Ranger Captain Frank Jones, Hughes led a company of Rangers in a hunt for Jones' killers. Eighteen suspects were tracked down and were either killed in shootouts or hanged. Western novelist Zane Grey authored THE LONE STAR RANGER and dedicated it to Hughes and his company of Rangers. It has been suggested that Hughes was the inspiration for the Lone Ranger character.

Rating Definition:

Good with cold blue present on the remarked barrel, otherwise an artificial smooth gray patina with some scattered minor pitting. A number of deliberate battering marks are present on the left side of the barrel. The slightly oversized pearl grips are fine with a couple small missing chips. Mechanically fine. A conversation piece that will decorate if nothing else!
