Description:

Manufactured circa late 1870s to 1880s with a total of less than 1,000. Adding to the rarity of this revolver is that it finished blue (these revolvers were usually finished in nickel) and it has a smooth bore. The bottom of each grip panel is stamped "WG SMITH". Research has been done by a former owner of the revolver (included), which may possibly tie this revolver to the Buffalo Bill Wild West Show. A check of the Buffalo Bill Wild West Show staff shows a Wm. Smith as being in charge of ammunition. This would have been an important position since the show relied heavily on ammunition. With a smooth bore the ammunition would be able to be tested to insure it worked properly for the headline performers. These smooth bores would have been special ordered and would be used to shoot glass target balls of the time to insure the ammunition would break the balls. The New Model is similar to the old model except for the barrel length, the side mounted ejector rod, a safety notch in the hammer and the presence of an exposed cylinder pin. This revolver has been classified as a "Secondary Martial" handgun, however there is no evidence of any contract. The top of the barrel is marked "FOREHAND & WADSWORTH WORCESTER, MASS. U.S.A./---PAT'D OCT. 22,61- APRIL 20'75-MAY 30'76---" and the matching serial number is marked on the butt and rear face of the cylinder. Blade front and frame notch rear sights, and fitted with smooth two piece walnut grips.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The revolver retains 40% original blue finish mixed with smooth brown and gray patina. The grips are also very good, with a small chip on the left toe, some minor wear on the lower edges and some light handling marks. The barrel marking is crisp and clear. The action is fine. A very rare blue finished, smooth bore Forehand & Wadsworth that may have been used for insuring that there was good ammunition for the Buffalo Bills Wild West shows.
