Manufactured in 1869, this shotgun is equipped with the Purdey thumb lever and multi-bite snap action. The thumb lever is located directly ahead of the trigger guard and fits around the guard. The trigger guard is cut away so that the users thumb easily fits into the trigger guard to reach the short throw push forward lever. The frame, hammers, locks and trigger guard are engraved with fine English scroll. Each lock is marked "PURDEY" and the underside of the frame is marked "PURDEY'S/PATENT" in an oval panel. The water table is marked with two "crown/BV" and "crown/V" proofs. The barrel flats are marked with the matching serial number, various British proof marks, "NITRO PROOF", "2 1/2" and "1/8 oz". Single bead sight on the smooth concave solid rib marked with a large "1" and "J. PURDEY 314 1/2, OXFORD STREET, LONDON". The bores measure .748 and the wall thickness is .059. Mounted with a checkered walnut wedge secured splinter forearm with engraved hardware (numbered to the gun) and straight grip stock with a checkered horn buttplate and silver initial oval engraved with a bull. 2 1/2 inch chambers, chokes gauge at a loose full/full, extractor and 14 1/4 inch length of pull. R./20 KING STREET/St JAMES'S" embossed in black on the lid, leather straps and red lining with Purdey label on the inside of the lid. In the case is a three piece wooden cleaning rod, a James Dixon shell extractor, nickel oiler, two nickel snap caps, a wooden handled turnscrew, nickel container with two extra firing pins, wooden wad rammer, wooden former (the latter two marked "J. PURDEY/& SON/12") and a wooden handle with a German silver farrel.

Rating Definition:

Refinished with 95% brown finish and most of the Damascus pattern remaining on the barrels. The remaining metal surfaces have a smooth gray patina. The forearm is very good with minor handling marks and crisp checkering. The stock has had the entire comb replaced and pieced in. There is a minor crack on the underside running from the frame to the trigger guard plate and there is a repair on the wrist. Overall there are some minor scratches and dents on the stock and the checkering is crisp. The case is good overall with some wear and moderate deteriorating of the lining and scuffs and small areas of absent leather on the exterior. The accessories are all good or better.
