This fine engraved and gold inlaid shotgun is number 2 of a game bird set and features a single white bead front sight on a solid concave rib, 2 1/2 inch chambers with ejectors. The solid rib is marked "MADE OF SIR JOSEPH WHITWORTH'S FLUID PRESSED STEEL HENRY ATKIN (FROM PURDEY'S) 2 JERMYN STREET HAYMARKET, LONDON" with a wedge of engraved scrollwork and a gold inlaid number "2" at the rear. The barrels have a band of engraving at the breech and are numbered to the gun with the flats having several British proofs and marked "NITRO PROOF". The bores measure .728 (right) and .728 (left), wall thickness is .022 (right) and .022 (left). Bore constriction is .003 (right) (Skt) and .019 (left) (Mod). The casehardened action features an extensive English scroll engraving with the fences having a deep relief scroll engraving and the side plates marked "HENRY ATKIN". The fine scrollwork extends to the break lever, trigger guard and forearm hardware. A gold inlaid number "2" is also present on the break lever and forearm hardware with a gold inlaid monogram on the trigger guard. The water table is twice marked with the serial number, has two "crown/V" proofs and the number "2". The underside of the frame is marked HENRY ATKIN/FROM/PURDEY'S". "BOSS' S PATENT/No 22894" is marked by the trigger. Single trigger and manual tang safety with "SAFE" in gold. The nicely figured forearm and straight grip stock feature fine multi-point checkering, a bare butt with scroll engraved toe and heel plates and an inlaid oval with a mythical flying creature feeding hatchlings over "SE PROPTER SUOS" in a banner on the underside of the buttstock. A large inlaid monogram (the same type of monogram as featured on the trigger) is present on the left side of the buttstock. The forearm and trigger guard are also numbered to the gun. Length of pull is 14 1/8 inches. Drop at comb 1 1/2 inches. Drop at heel 2 1/16 inches. Cast off 1/4 inch. Toe out 3/4 inches. Henry Atkin learned the craft of shotgun making from his father who was employed by Purdey. By the late 19th century Henry Atkin was on his own making superb British shotguns. Today Atkin Grant & Lang continues the legacy set forth by Henry Atkin with shotguns ranked among the best that British makers have to offer.

Rating Definition:

Excellent. The barrels retain 97% of the blue finish showing some minor thinning and some very scattered minor handling marks. The trigger guard retains most of the blue finish. The action retains 90% original case colors, otherwise faded to a smooth silver-gray. The wood is excellent with some scattered minor handling marks and some blemishes in the overall crisp checkering.
