The barrels are numbered to the gun and the barrel flats are stamped with crown/letter proofs, "13/1", "CHOKE" and "12/0" inside a diamond. Bores measure .732 (right) and .737 (left), bore constriction is .018 (right) (Mod) and .035 (left) (Full), the wall thickness is .047 (right) and .044 (left). The receiver and side locks feature extensive and fine tight scroll and English rose bouquet engraving. The lock plates are marked "BOSS & Co." inside a banner. The sides of the receiver are marked "BOSS'S PATENT" on a matte background. The trigger assembly is marked "BOSS'S/No. 22894/PATENT". The trigger guard is also engraved and stamped with the serial number. The water table has the serial number marked twice and two "crown/V" proofs. The engraved blue finished break lever has a gold inlaid "2" that matches the number on the solid rib. Double triggers and checkered tear drop shaped automatic tang safety with "SAFE" in gold. The forearm hardware features the same tight English scroll and rose bouquet engraving and it too has a gold inlaid number "2". The nicely figured forearm (numbered to gun) and straight grip stock feature multi-point fine checkering, a blank silver initial oval and a solid Old English Pachmayr recoil pad. Length of pull is 14 1/2 inches. Drop at comb is 1 5/8 inches and drop at heel is 2 3/16 inches. Cast off is 3/8 inches, toe out is 3/4 inches. Comes with a leather hand guard. Boss & Co. is one of the longest established English shotgun makers and dates back to 1773 when William Boss started a gunmaking apprenticeship in Birmingham. In 1812, William's son Thomas set up shop at the prestigious address 73 St James' Street, an address that would become synonymous with Boss & Co in the 19th century. Today Boss & Co. continues to manufacture quality shotguns with alextracto hand guard.

Rating Definition:

Very fine as period refinished. The barrels retain 95% of the rust blue finish showing some loss at the muzzle, some minor thinning and some minor handling marks. The trigger guard retains some blue finish with the balance a smooth gray patina. The action retains traces of original case colors with the balance a bright appearance. The engraving is crisp. The wood is fine with a few light handling marks and overall crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent.
