Description:

According to the consignor's research, the large bore double barrel big game percussion rifle manufactured by Westley Richards was made for Ewart Lyon & Co. circa 1845. Ewart Lyon & Co. operated out of Bombay, India and was a member of the Bombay Chamber of Commerce. The scroll and big cat scene engraved lock plates (tiger on the left plate, lion on the right plate) are marked "WESTLEY RICHARDS" at the front. The Damascus barrels have a solid rib marked "WESTLEY RICHARDS 170 NEW BOND ST LONDON" behind the three leaf rear sight. Scroll engraved hammers with sliding safeties. The barrel tang is scroll engraved and features an engraved giraffe. The trigger guard features an engraved scene with a man working with an elephant. The half stock has a checkered wrist, single barrel wedge and a flat buttplate with scrollwork engraved on the tang. The ramrod pipes hold a shortened brass tipped wooden ramrod. The partitioned case has brass hardware and the inside of the lid has a paper Westley Richards label with the number "93" painted on a long side. With an iron bullet mold, cap tin and three sights.

Rating Definition:

Very good as refinished. The barrels retain traces of the refurbished brown finish in the protected areas with the balance a mottled gray patina. The action has a mottled gray patina and the buttplate and repaired trigger guard retain 70% of the refinished blue finish. The stock is fine with some chipping on the forearm, a few minor handling marks and re-cut checkering. Mechanically fine. The case is fair with worn lining and partition walls, a large chunk of wood missing from a lid short side, some gouges and a number of minor handling/storage marks.
