One of only 316 produced, the Ward-Burton was one of the top 4 performers at the 1870 Breechloader Trials, where the Allin Trapdoor system was the overall winner. Blade front and folding ladder rear sights, with "U.S./SPRINGFIELD 1871" on the left side of the receiver and "WARD-BURTON PATENT/DEC.20.1859 FEB.21.1871" on top of the bolt. Smooth straight grip stock, with a saddle ring and bar on the left side next to a "JWA" cartouche, and "US" on the buttplate heel.

Rating Definition:

Very good plus, showing a mixed brown and gray patina overall, with scattered areas of mild pitting and minor handling marks. The stock is fine, with a crisp cartouche, scattered scratches and dents overall and mild chipping around the buttplate. Mechanically fine. A rare milestone in American weapons development and scarce in any condition.
