The serial number (6273) puts this model in the 2nd type manufactured in 1894 and 1895 and subsequently altered to a Model 1896 Rifle. The left side of the receiver is marked " U.S./1894 SPRINGFIELD ARMORY" and the serial number. The rifle has a ladder rear sight graduated from 2 to 20 with an unmarked base. Full straight grip stock with handguard that covers receiver. The front barrel band has the upper center portion cut-out, a bayonet lug and stacking swivel. A circled script "P" is stamped behind the trigger guard. The buttplate has a compartment holding an oiler. The leather sling is stamped "ROCK ISLAND/ARSENAL" and "E.H.S." The stock has no provisions for a cleaning rod.

Fine as arsenal refurbished. The rifle retains 85% thinning original blue finish and 70% original case colors. The refinished wood is very good with some minor pressure dents. Mechanically excellent.
