Description:

This M1 Garand rifle has been arsenal/depot converted to a M1D sniper rifle configuration. The M1D sniper rifles were an improvement over the M1Cs in that any standard M1 Garand rifle could be converted to this sniper rifle configuration by just adding the new M1D barrel. This allowed a standard M1 garand to be overhauled and converted into a M1D sniper configuration. They were used during the early part of the Korean War and early days of Vietnam and remained in some National Guard and Reserve units into the mid 1970s. The rear of the receiver has the standard Springfield Armory markings with this receiver being originally manufactured in early 1942 and has a mix of WWII and post-war manufactures parts. The Springfield barrel is marked "1 53 MD34" and is fitted with a correct M84 sniper scope with correct M1D mount. The serial number of the scope is "32813" and comes with a rubber eyepiece and sun shield. This rifle is fitted with a set of walnut handguards and a late birch replacement with the alternating cross grain pattern. The left side has DOD cartouche with a single circled "P" in the grip area. It is fitted with a lace on leather cheekpiece stamped "MRT/8-51". This rifle is complete with cleaning rod and plastic oiler stored in the buttsock trap compartment and a rare expermential type "closed prong" flash hider. Also provided by the consignor is a letter (dated may 1967) stating that this rifle was assembled as a select grade officer's rifle presented to Captain Dorsey (the original owner), Project Officer, Springfield Armory.

Rating Definition:

Very fine with 95% of the arsenal refurbished parkerized finish overall with edge and high spot wear with minor finish loss on the receiver rail and top of the bolt. The stock and handguards are all in very fine condition with a nice oil finished appearance with minimal handling marks. The scope is also in very fine condition with 97% of the blue finish with minor blue loss overall with clear optics. Mechanically fine.
