Description:

This is an example of an early production original and unaltered Springfield Model 1903 rifle. This rifle has the early features that are characteristic of the First Model 1903 rifles manufactured between 1907 and 1909, which include an early "S" pattern stock with one reinforcing bolt and the straight profile along the left edge of the receiver. The cocking piece, safety and magazine cut-off have a casehardened finish. The forend tip is stamped with a small "S". The barrel is marked "SA/ordnance bomb/6-08" and the top of the front receiver ring is marked with the standard five line marking. Ramped blade front sight with a cover and tangent rear sight graduated to 27. The rear sight windage and elevation knobs are the early small diameter, pattern with concave faces and grooves. Mounted with a smooth walnut straight grip stock with matching early pattern handguard with no spring clips or rear sight clearance cut and smooth buttplate with compartment containing an original oiler and pull through cleaning tool. The left side of the wrist is stamped with a boxed "J.F.G." cartouche and there is a small "76" and circled script "P" on the underside behind the trigger guard. Complete with an early Model 1907 leather sling. Model 1903 rifles manufactured from 1907-1910 are the most desirable of all Model 1903 service rifles and are by far, the most difficult rifles to find in excellent condition.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The rifle retains 75% plus of the original blue and casehardened finish. The upper barrel band, front sight base, trigger guard and floor plate have some minor finish wear. The buttplate retains almost all of the original blue finish with some thinning to smooth gray and gray patina on the edges. The receiver has a deep mottled finish and the water-quenched cocking piece and cut-off show much of the case colors. The bolt retains almost all of the original blue finish. The stock is generally excellent. The edges of the grasping grooves are sharp and the inspector's mark and proof are crisp. This is a very desirable Model 1903 rifle that is very scarce in very fine original, unaltered condition.
