Description:

This is a WWI Springfield Model 1903 rifle manufactured in 1915 and subsequently fitted (nonarsenal) with a Model 1913 Warner & Swasey 5.2 X telescopic sight. The rifle has a case-hardened receiver and military blue barrel, barrel bands, rear sight base, bolt, trigger guard and floor plate. The receiver is marked with the standard Springfield Armory markings over serial number "597148". The top of the barrel is marked "SA/Ordnance Shell & Flame insignia/4-15". It is fitted with a WWI finger groove stock with two reinforcing bolts, with a single circled "P" proof in the pistol grip area with a boxed "W.E.S." and "B.A.J.S." boxed cartouches on the left side, with a number "20" on the tip of the forearm and a later pattern handguard. The rifle has the early issue smooth buttplate, with a straight bolt handle, grooved trigger, folding leaf rear sight with bright finished face and no 2750 yard center notch. The receiver is fitted with a very nice reproduction base with three screws that has an original WWI era Warner and Swasey sniper scope. The scope body is stamped with: "TELESCOPIC MUSKET SIGHT/MODEL OF 1913/7699/THE WARNER & SWASEY CO.". The top of the scope body, has the brass windage and drift corrections plate. The left side has the distinctive windage and elevation knobs used on these early sniper scopes. The inside of the sight dovetail on this scope is not stamped with a rifle serial number. The upper edge of the stock is inletted to accept the sight bracket. The Army procured approximately 3000 Warner & Swasey Model 1913 telescopic sights for use on 1903 Springfield sniper rifles between 1916 and 1919. A significant number of Model 1913 telescopic sights purchased by the Ordnance Department during WWI were not serial numbered and were probably never fitted to Model 1903 rifles. This rifle is complete with a Kerr sling.

Rating Definition:

Very good as refinished/assembled. The stock is very good with a nice darker brown color overall with nice distinct finger grooves and visible proof marks. The W&S sniper scope retains most of the black painted finish overall with a intact original rubber eyepiece. The windage and elevation knobs move correctly and freely. The optics are like all these in that it has lots of specks and dust particles inside.
