Description:

This example was manufactured in 1874. The barrels have a single brass bead sight, are choked improved cylinder/light modified and appear to be chambered for 2 3/4 inch 12 gauge shells. The edges of the lock plates, receiver, trigger guard and hammers have a simple engraved border with some small flourishes of floral scroll engraving. Mounted on a nicely figured, multi-point checkered walnut forearm and straight grip stock with a smooth steel buttplate. Length of pull is 14 1/4 inches. The research letter states it was completed in October of 1874, is an 11 gauge chambered for the 12A shell, features twist steel barrels, patterned 135 #8 pellets in an 18" x 24" circle at 45 yards from both barrels and that the stock dimensions were 14 1/4" LOP and 2 3/4" DAH.

Rating Definition:

Good, the barrels retain half of the original brown finish with nearly all of the Damascus twist pattern visible. The remainder of the metal components have a gray/brown patina with traces of the original case colors in the protected areas. The reoiled wood is good with some scattered dings and scratches, a few small chips, a small repair at the toe and a few very small hairline cracks. Mechanically it is slightly off face, however there is a moderate bulge, about mid-way in each barrel with some other minor dents in the barrels. The overall condition merits a thorough inspection by a competent gunsmith.
