Description:

This is an outstanding example of a Winchester Model 1876 Deluxe Lever Action Rifle that was manufactured in 1883. The rifle has the Third Model integral dust cover rail and dust cover with serrated rear edges. The forearm cap, receiver, hammer, lever and crescent buttplate are color casehardened and the barrel and magazine are blued. The dust cover, loading gate, bolt and trigger have a niter blue finish. The rifle has a full octagon 28-inch barrel and full length magazine. The barrel has a 'Hunting Style' front sight with colored insert and adjustable folding leaf rear sight marked "1876" on the top of the leaf. A special order graduated peep sight is mounted on the upper tang. The rifle is fitted with a special order single set-trigger. The forearm and pistol grip stock are highly figured, "Fancy Grain", walnut with "Style H" checkering and a high polish 'piano' finish. The bottom of the pistol grip has an ebony inlay. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the legend: "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860." in two lines ahead of the rear sight. "CAL 40-60" is roll-stamped on the top of the barrel between the rear sight and the receiver. "40-60" is roll-stamped in script across the bottom of the cartridge elevator. The serial number, "45724" is roll-stamped across the bottom of the lower receiver tang between the lever latch and the tang screw. The rifle is accompanied by a period, wooden case that contains a three-piece, jointed wooden cleaning rod.

Rating Definition:

Excellent. The rifle is all original and is in a remarkable state of preservation. The barrel and magazine have nearly 95% of the original blue finish with some very minor edge wear at the muzzle. The front sight blade is missing the colored insert. The barrel markings are crisp. The forearm cap, receiver, hammer and lever have 85% of the original casehardened finish with strong case colors. The case colors have silvered slightly on the contact points on the bottom of the receiver and lever. The case colors on the buttplate show moderate handling wear and are half intact. The loading gate, dust cover, bolt and trigger retain more the 90% of the delicate, fire blue, finish. The deluxe walnut stock and forearm are both in excellent condition; nearly all of the high polish 'piano' finish remains, the checkering is sharp and wear is limited to a few, scattered, insignificant, handling marks. The wooden case is in fair condition; the exterior has numerous old dents and scratches, the interior has been period re-lined and the handle and closing strap are modern replacements. This is an excellent example of a deluxe, special order Winchester Model 1876 Lever Action Rifle.
