Description:

Deluxe, special order, Winchester Model 1873 rifle with Third Model integral dust cover rail and dust cover with serrated edges. The rifle is complete with a Cody Firearms Museum letter that describes the rifle features as: "38 caliber", "Barrel Length: 28 inches", "Barrel Shape: Octagon", "Set Trigger", "Checkered stock with pistol grip" and "Casehardened". The special order, 28-inch octagon barrel and full-length magazine have the Winchester commercial blue finish. The dust cover, loading gate and trigger are niter blue. The forearm cap, receiver, hammer, lever and crescent buttplate are color case-hardened. The forearm and pistol grip stock are highly figured, fancy grade walnut with checkered panels and high polish 'piano' finish. The pistol grip has an ebony inlay. The receiver has the stepped profile found on .38 caliber and smaller arms, the upper tang is factory drilled and tapped for a rear sight and the buttplate has a sliding brass trap door. The barrel has a sporting style front sight with nickel-silver blade and a buckhorn, sporting style, rear sight with serrated edges. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped: "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860." in two lines ahead of the rear sight. "38-CAL" is roll-stamped on the top of the barrel between the rear sight and the receiver. The brass cartridge elevator is stamped "38 CAL." in script letters. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped: "-MODEL. 1873-" in fancy letters with foliate devices at either end. The serial number: "148059/A" is stamped in script across the lower tang behind the lever latch.

Rating Definition:

Excellent. The rifle is all original and retains at least 95% of the blue and 85% plus casehardened finish. Nearly all of the blue is present on the barrel and magazine. The dust cover and loading gate have about 97% of the fire blue finish. The forearm cap, receiver, hammer and lever have at least 95% of the vivid case colors found on deluxe, special order, firearms. The case colors on the buttplate have faded slightly. The stock and forearm are in excellent condition. Nearly all of the high polish piano finish is present and the checkering is sharp. Finish wear is minimal. Handling wear is limited to one small dent on the left side of the forearm near the receiver a several very minor handling or storage marks. This is an excellent example of a deluxe, special order Winchester Model 1873 Rifle with special order 28-inch barrel, single set-trigger and very desirable case-hardened receiver.
