Description:

This is an example of a fine Oakes London brass three barrel boxlock pistol. It is 8 inches in overall length with the left side of the frame marked "Oakes" in an oval surrounded by a martial motif and the right side marked "London" in an oval surrounded by a martial motif. A Samuel Oakes operated in London as a gunsmith around 1770 as recorded in some trial proceeding from that year and a M. Oakes of London is recorded in A. Merwyn Carey's English, Irish, and Scottish Firearms Makers as having operated from 1758-1757. The three barrels are positioned two on top and one below in the center. The underside of the frame is marked with a recessed "crown/GP" and "crown/V". It has a tap action lever on the left side that allows for a rapid firing (for the time) of the three shots and has a sliding hammer safety and smooth one piece grip.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The pistol features an attractive aged patina on the barrels and box with some minor marks and dings while the remaining components have an aged silver patina with some pitting and marks. The grip is very good with some minor dings, scratches, and marks. The action is very fine and the tap action rotates smoothly. The bore on the lower barrel is partially misshaped.
