Description:

Model 1858 Army double-action revolver that was manufactured by the Starr Arms Co., of New York, New York, c. 1858-1860. Between 1862 and 1864 the Ordnance Department purchased approximately 21,000 .44 caliber Starr D.A. revolvers. Many of these revolvers were issued to mid-western Federal cavalry regiments. The revolver has a high polish blue finish on the barrel, six-shot cylinder, frame, trigger guard and back strap. The loading lever, trigger and hammer have a color case-hardened finish. The screws have a fire blue finish. The one-piece grip is oil finished walnut. The round barrel has a dove-tail mounted, iron half-moon, front sight. The rear sight is a groove in the hammer. The right side of the frame is roll-stamped: "STARR ARMS. CO. NEW YORK. NEW YORK." below the cylinder. The opposite side of the frame is roll-stamped: "STARR'S PATENT JAN. 15, 1856." in one line. The serial number, "8529" is stamped on the side of the cylinder and in the frame hammer slot. Single letter "H" and "W" Ordnance sub-inspection marks are stamped on most components. The Ordnance Inspection mark which consists of the script initials "BH" in a rectangle with rounded ends is stamped on the both sides of the grip.

Rating Definition:

Excellent. The revolver retains nearly 95% of the bright original high polish blue finish and 98% of the vivid case colors. The blue finish has several small areas of flaking on the barrel, cylinder and frame. The cylinder has turn marks between the stops and several insignificant scratches. The grip is in excellent condition with nearly perfect Ordnance inspection marks. This is an excellent example of a U.S. contract Starr Model 1858 Army D.A. revolver.
