Description:

This is an excellent example of a Burnside Fifth Model Carbine manufactured by the Burnside Rifle Co., of Providence, Rhode Island from 1863-1865. The carbine has the distinctive guide screw in the right side of the frame that identifies it as a Fifth Model carbine. The top of the receiver is marked "BURNSIDE PATENT/MODEL OF 1864" over the serial number and "BURNSIDE RIFLE CO./PROVIDENCE =R.I." is stamped on the lock plate behind the hammer. The breechblock is stamped with the number "12350". An "R" sub-inspection mark is stamped on some components. Pinched blade front sight, two leaf rear sight with "1", "3" and "5" graduations, mounted with a oil-finished black walnut forearm and straight grip stock with a iron buttplate and sling swivel. A sling bar and ring are mounted on the left side of the receiver.

Rating Definition:

Excellent. The carbine retains 95% of the original blue and casehardened finish. The barrel has nearly all of the original military blue finish intact. The receiver has 95% plus vivid case colors. Most of the nitre blue finish is present on the breechblock and upper and lower receiver tangs. The hammer has some scattered light pitting and the case colors have silvered out. The finish on the lock plate has faded to a gray patina. The stock and forearm are very good with moderate handling wear. There is a moderate repaired chip on the left wrist. The letter "W" is lightly carved in the right side of the stock, which appears to be period. This is a solid example of an important Civil War Federal Cavalry carbine.
