Description:

Civil War production Sharps New Model 1863 percussion breach loading carbine converted by Sharps to chamber the .50/70 metallic cartridge circa 1867. It has a blued barrel with stud mounted blade front sight and a folding ladder rear sight graduated to "8" with the R.S. Lawrence patent information on the base. The casehardened receiver has a metallic cartridge breech block and hammer but retains the percussion Lawrence pellet priming device. The stock and forearm are oil finished straight grain American walnut held by a single case hardened barrel band. The top of the barrel is roll stamped "SHARPS RIFLE/MANUFG. Co./HARTFORD CONN." ahead of the rear sight. "NEW MODEL 1863" is stamped between the rear sight and the receiver. The left flat is marked "F E.A.W." The serial number "C,26741" is stamped on the upper receiver tang. The side plate and right side of the receiver have the standard "C.SHARPS" and "R.S. LAWRENCE" patent markings. Additional Sharps patent markings are visible on the left side of the receiver. The stock is stamped with the "DFC" ribbon cartouche found on most .50-70 government contract conversions. It is also fitted with a saddle ring bar and ring with leather tassel attached on the left side rear of the frame and the wrist.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The barrel retains mostly a brown patina overall. The receiver retains 30% of the original fiery case colors with nearly all the colors remaining on the right plate and hammer and a brown patina on the balance. The barrel band also has traces of the darkened case colors with an otherwise dark gray patina. The buttplate has a brown patina with some small sections of oxidation at the high edges. The wood is very good as refreshed with a clear cartouche, some mild dings throughout, and scattered light scratches. Mechanically excellent with clear markings.
