Description:

Measuring 17 1/8 inches in overall length, the dirk is fitted with an 11 3/4 inch double fuller blade with a filed spine, an attractive carved hardwood grip with the traditional basket weave/Scottish thistle patterns, silver collars and beads, and a rose-tinted clear stone on the pommel. The traditional fork and knife set is also present, furnished to match the dirk hilt and fitted with a pair of spring loaded retention locks. The sheath is leather covered with silver fittings which are extensively engraved. The back of the dirk throat is marked with a thistle and the hallmarks of Wilson & Sharp of Edinburgh. The back of the fork throat is inscribed "Walter Dawson Campbell (Jr.)/from his/loving wife & children/Margaret Seton Campbell/Walter Seton," and the back of the knife throat is engraved with a severed boar's head over a banner reading "NE OBLIVISCARIS" (forget not). The fronts and the front of the tips are each decorated with an interwoven pair of beasts with the dirk throat having the raised cipher of Princess Louise, the fork throat having a repeat of the boar head and banner, and the knife throat showing a cat sejant erect over a banner reading "SANS PEUR" (without fear). Collectively, these mottos and symbols are all associated with Clan Campbell of the Scottish Highlands as well as the 1st Battalion Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders; the Clan and Battalion shared mottos, and Princess Louise was a Campbell by marriage and designed the Battalion's regimental crest. Walter Campbell Jr. has not been positively identified.

Rating Definition:

Very fine overall. The fine steel components show some light spotting and handling marks, and the hilts showing sharp carving and excellent detail. Four silver accent brads are absent from the fork with a small glue repair on the knife and minor play in the stone mounts on all three pommels. The sheath is very good with some minor scuffing on the leather and signs of light polishing on the silver, and a dark patina reforming overall and still present in the protected areas. A top quality Scottish dirk.
