Description:

Remington New Model Navy revolver manufactured c. 1865. Remington manufactured approximately 28,000 .36 caliber New Model Navy revolvers between 1863 and 1878. About 4300 of these revolvers were purchased by the U.S. Navy. This revolver has single block letter "D" inspection marks on the barrel, loading lever, frame, cylinder and trigger guard; "M" is stamped on the bottom of both grips. These markings are Remington factory markings and not military inspection marks. The revolver lacks the anchor stamp found on some U.S. Navy Remington revolvers. The solid frame revolver has a high polish blue finish on the barrel, frame and cylinder. The hammer has a casehardened finish and the trigger is niter blue. The trigger guard is brass. The two-piece walnut grips are oil finished. The top of the octagon barrel is roll-stamped "PATENTED SEPT. 14, 1858/E. REMINGTON & SONS, ILLION, NEW YORK, U.S.A./NEW-MODEL" in three lines. The serial number "32545" is stamped on the underside of the barrel. Serial number "32518" is stamped on the left side of the frame beneath the grip. The number "16" is penciled on the inside of both grips. This revolver was formerly part of the famous William M. Locke Collection.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The barrel and loading lever retain most of the original blue finish. The cylinder has about 70% of the blue finish with scattered flaking; the percussion nipples show minimal flash pitting. The frame has been cleaned and has smooth, silver gray patina that could be mistaken for casehardening. Traces of the original blue finish remain in protected areas of the frame. The case colors on the hammer are faded and nearly match the finish on the frame. The brass trigger guard has an attractive, untouched, patina. There is a gap between the top of the trigger guard and the bottom of the frame. The oil finished walnut grips are in excellent condition. The bore is mirror bright. This is a good looking example of a Remington New Model Navy Revolver which was formerly part of one of the greatest collections of American handguns.
