Description:

Developed in the 15th century, the Morion helmet became widely adopted across Europe by groups looking for a sturdy but easily made helmet for their foot soldiers and pikemen. Historically, it has become one of the signature items of the Spanish expansion into the Western Hemisphere and was worn into combat by the Parliamentarian New Model Army. Measuring 13 1/4 inches long, 9 1/4 inches wide and 11 1/4 inches tall, the brim and comb of the helmet are decorated with a rope pattern executed in light engraving on the brim and in hammered repousse work on the comb. Mounted where the comb meets the front of the brim is an engraved brass plume holder with decoratively curled edges and a set of 18 iron rivets with brass floral washers arranged above the brim (nine to a side). These rivets secure a band of canvas webbing on the inside of the helmet which shows a rough hammered appearance. No makers marks or distinctive decoration is visible. No guarantee of age as these were made into the Victorian period.

Rating Definition:

About good. The metal shows a mixed brown patina overall with a few breaks and cracks in the rolled brim edge and a mixed gray and brown patina overall. A few small scuffs and cracks are visible in the crown and comb along with some denting. Traces of the webbing remain, and some internal washers are damaged or absent.
