Description:

This is one of many Model 1816s that underwent modification prior to the Civil War. Remington Arms Company completed a contract for 20,000 Maynard primer locks and percussion bolsters that were then sent to the Frankford Arsenal in Philadelphia where they were then used on Model 1816 muskets. Most had rifled barrels and were fitted with long range leaf sights as seen on this example. "REMINGTON'S/ILION, N.Y./1857/U.S." is marked vertically behind the hammer on the lock plate. The markings on the barrel are not legible. It has a bayonet lug on top of the barrel and a front sight absent on the front double barrel band which is marked "B/95". The trigger guard has a "CB" on the front tang and a faintly visible mark on the rear tang possibly a sub-inspection mark as various single letter marks are present on most of the other components. The one piece full stock is held by three barrel bands. Includes an iron ram rod with trumpet head.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The gun remains bright with some small amounts of oxidation near the screws and rivets with some otherwise minor scratches and marks. Some of the markings are unclear or faded. The re-oiled wood is also very fine with only minor marks and dings. The action is excellent.
