Description:

This musket made by W. L. Evans of Evansburg, PA is dated "1826/U.S" on the rear of the lock. The lock plate is marked in front of the hammer "W.L EVENS" (misspelled by the die maker) over a small eagle and shield and "V. FORGE" under it. The left top of the barrel is marked with the inspector's initials "LS" and "US" over a "P" proof mark. Top buttplate tang marked "US". The side plate is marked "46" and the top jaw of the cock is marked "73" on the left. It has a brass pan. The stock flat is stamped with an "LS" oval cartouche with three barrel bands.

Rating Definition:

Fair. The musket retains the bright finish although aged with brown speckled pitting. The brass pan has an aged patina. The otherwise good stock has a crack in the butt on the right side, a chip by the cock, and various minor scrapes, dings, scratches, and marks. Mechanically fine.
