Description:

Measuring 31 3/4 inches overall, with a 25 1/2 inch lozenge cross-section blade decorated with etched patriotic designs and marked "N.P.Ames/Cutler/Springfield" in a scroll on one side. The guard is brass, with clamshell languets, beaded quillons, a ribbed bone grip, and a knight's helm shaped pommel. With a brass fitted black leather sheath and a fine buffed white leather belt hanger. A similar hilt is pictured on page 75 of Hamilton's "The Ames Sword Company 1829-1939" as an example of production circa 1840-1847.

Rating Definition:

Very good. Some shallow pitting and spotting is visible on the very good original blade, with an aged patina on the brass and light handling marks overall. The otherwise good sheath has been tape repaired, with some tearing and creasing of the hanger.
