Description:

This is an example of a U.S. Model 1841 Rifle adapted for long range and sabre bayonet that was manufactured by the Whitney Arms Co. of New Haven, Connecticut in 1851. The rifle has a browned barrel, brass blade front and long range rear folding ladder sights, casehardened lock and hammer, brass furniture including the distinctive large brass patch box (with replacement nipple inside), and the correct iron ramrod. The right side of the barrel has provisions for mounting a saber style bayonet. The lock plate is marked: "N. HAVEN/1855" behind the hammer and "E.WHITNEY/US" in front of the hammer. The left side, breech end of the barrel is marked "US/ADK/VP". The left flat is marked "STEEL". the barrel tang "1855" and the buttplate tang is marked "U.S." and "5". The varnished walnut stock has faint signs of the inspection cartouches on the left flat. The Model 1841 was modified multiple times throughout its years of service and saw extensive service with both Union and Confederate forces during the first years of the Civil War.

Rating Definition:

Fair as partially refinished with a refinished stock. The brown finish has mostly thinned with a light brown patina in its place and some vice marks at the rear with an artificial brown applied. The lock plate and hammer have a brown patina as well while the brass components have an attractive aged finish. The stock has been sanded and refinished and has a high gloss varnish with some minor scratches and dings. Mechanically excellent with clear markings.
