Description:

This attractive snaphaunce (snaphance) belt pistol has fine engraving with various patterns on the ornate barrel and furniture. It is built in the Scottish style with the brass lock plate mounted on the left side and marked "RA" while the pan is dated "1617" and a "2" is marked at the breech on the upper tang. Despite the date and the inclusion of a touchhole, this example is likely a non-firing Victorian Era copy made with fine attention to detail. The barrel, frizzen, sliding pan cover, cock, upper tang, and 4 inch belt hook are iron with the remaining components, including the round trigger, are brass. It is mounted with a walnut stock with some decorative carving. Includes an iron ramrod with brass tip.

Rating Definition:

Very good as assembled. The iron components have an aged dark gray/brown patina with light pitting from years of storage. The brass components have an attractive aged patina with crisp engraving. There is some red residue between the frizzen and the pan. The wood is good with various dings, scratches, and marks and a hairline crack on the forend extending back from just behind the forend cap at the upper edge. The action is not operable.
