Description:

This is a very fine example of a late production Model 1884 trapdoor rifle that includes an original leather sling, cleaning rod and front sight cover. This model was the final configuration of trapdoor rifles until the development and fielding of the 1898 Krag rifle. The left rear section of the barrel is marked with the "VP/Eagle Head/P" proof in front of the receiver with a small "A" proof directly on top of the barrel in front of the receiver. The breech block is marked "US/MODEL/1884". The lock plate is marked with the spread wing American Eagle and "US SPRINGFIELD" ahead of the hammer and it is fitted with the correct three click tumbler. This example still retains the two piece trigger guard, the buttplate without a trap. The barrel has the long range Buffington rear sight that is adjustable for windage and elevation and the blade front sight. It has the correct full length stock, that is stamped with a sharp, boxed script "SWP/1888" cartouche on the left side. There is a single circled script "P" proof behind the trigger guard. The rifle is complete with a late pattern unmarked brown leather trapdoor sling, the original cleaning rod and a late Model 1888 front sight cover.

Rating Definition:

Very fine with 85% plus of the original blue finish with most of the blue loss on the exposed side of the lock plate. The breech block and tang both retain 85% of their case colors, just slightly fading on top of the breech block with bright fiery colors in the protected areas. The stock is also in very fine condition with minor handling marks and light pressure dents on the sides with a clear and very distinct cartouche and firing proof. A really very nice example of desirable late pattern M1884 Trapdoor rifle. Mechanically excellent.
