Description:

Marketed by Shannon, Miller & Crane of New York, this sword measures 36 inches overall, with a 30 inch diamond cross-section blade decorated with gold washed acid etching, showing patriotic/martial theme s on both sides and "Carl G. Rasmus." on the right. The hilt is gilt brass, with patriotic designs overall, a lion face on the rear quillion, and a silver finished grip. With a nickel finished, gilt fitted sheath, with sculpted and cut-through tip and suspension bands and the etched inscription "Presented to/Lieutenant Carl G. Rasmus, by/the Members of Co.A, 23d Regt. N.G.N.Y./April 20, 1896." located between the bands. Carl Gerhard Rasmus, a resident of Cedarhurst on Long Island would continue his career with the 23rd Regiment until 1913, retiring at the brevet rank of Colonel and permanent rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

Rating Definition:

Excellent, with light handling marks and spotting overall. Some flaking of the nickel has occurred, with well aged steel exposed. The gilt finish is strong, and the etching is sharply rendered.
