This is an interesting Sharps New Model 1863 Carbine with post capture brass tack ornamentation on the stock and a rawhide grip on the period repaired wrist. Manufactured from 1863 to 1865, this carbine is fitted with a saddle ring bar on the left wrist and features a blade front sight and Lawrence Patent folding rear sight graduated to 800 yards. The top of the barrel ahead of the rear sight is marked with the three-line address, and "NEW MODEL 1863" is marked behind the rear sight. The left rear flat is marked with the inspection mark "E.A.W." The lock is marked with the two-line Sharps and Lawrence patent date markings. It is mounted with a smooth forearm and straight grip stock with a carbine buttplate and patch box. The consignor notes indicate that the serial number 96562 is covered by the wrist repair.

Rating Definition:

Fair. The rifle has an overall brown patina with oxidation. The barrel has some marks and scratches, and the patch box has some pitting. The brass tacks have an attractive aged patina. The stock and forearm are worn with a portion absent above the lock plate, minor cracks extending from the forearm studs and those on the upper left side of the butt, and various scratches and marks.
