Manufactured in 1901. The serial number correctly falls into the carbine serial number range (222609-362256) and features a blade front sight on a high stud and Mauser style rear sight graduated from 1 to 20 with an unmarked base. It has the small, knurled straight cocking knob that is seen exclusively on some of the carbines. Standard left side receiver markings. Mounted with a straight grip highly figured walnut stock with matching hand guard, single barrel band, and curve toed steel buttplate with compartment and the cleaning rod inside. The left side of the stock is stamped with a sharp "JSA/1901" cartouche and a circled script "P" is behind the trigger guard with a "J" sub inspection mark just ahead of it and a "19" marked on the top of the butt at the heel. It is known that Springfield Armory in 1900-1901 used a supply of fancy grade walnut for stocks.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. This carbine retains 50% of the original blue finish and correct dark gray casehardened color on the frame. The finish on the barrel is thinning and a brown patina is starting to form. The gray case color is partially interrupted by some speckling of oxidation and some wear on the front of the loading gate. The barrel band has a strip of finish absent, and the trigger guard has some wear with a brown patina. The buttplate is a mottled gray with some minor pitting and marks. The highly figured walnut stock is very fine with some minor scratches and pressure marks. The action is excellent.
