Description:

This is a beautifully refinished rifle with nickel plating originally produced between 1866-1868. These rifles were the next technical advancement in the transition from the Civil War muzzle loading rifle to the true 1869 Springfield breeching loading/trapdoor style rifles. These Second Model Allin Conversions used an improved, far more simplified, conversion than the First Model conversions that proved to be unreliable and complicated to produce. The basis for these 1866 rifles were new left over 1863 Pattern Civil War muzzle loaders that ended up being very close the final 1873 Pattern trapdoor rifles. During the conversion process these rifles first had the barrels bored out and a 50 caliber rifled steel liner was brazed in place. The rear of the barrel was milled out and a modernized trapdoor mechanism was installed that incorporated a center fire firing pin and an internal extractor that eliminated the rack and pinion extracting mechanism from the First Models. It has correct two position rear sight mounted on the barrel ahead of the breechblock hinge base and the breechblock was marked on top with "11" and "1866/Eagle head". The lock plate is marked with the large American Eagle next to "U.S./SPRINGFIELD", and the rear is dated 1865. The stock is the correct full length military version that has three cartouches on the left flat. It is complete with an original cleaning rod and socket bayonet.

Rating Definition:

Very fine as refinished with 90% nickel plating remaining. The barrel has an orange peel texture and some nickel plating is absent on the lock plate with some copper color showing. There are also some areas on the barrel and the trigger guard where the plating is imperfect. There are some minor scratches, marks, and dings throughout with some areas of oxidation including on the rear barrel band, the bayonet, and lower tang. The wood is very good with a legible cartouche, various minor dings, scratches, dents, and marks.
