The rifle is fitted with a Buffington rear sight with precise windage and elevation adjustments and a covered, fixed front sight. The lock plate is marked with the standard eagle/shield motif and "US/SPRINGFIELD" ahead of the hammer. The front of the breechblock is marked "U.S./MODEL/1884". The left side of the barrel is stamped with "V/P/eagle head/P" proofs at the breech, an "A" inspection marked on top and an "R" at the bottom left. The oil finished walnut stock has a clear "SWP/1892" boxed cartouche on the left side of the wrist, a circled script "P" proof stamped behind the trigger guard and a faint "X" and "44" is marked on the left side between the side plate screws. It has a buttplate with compartment for tools (absent) and is marked "U.S." The rifle has the blue finished ramrod-bayonet.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The rifle retains 60% plus of the original finish and case colors with the blue finish thinning to form a brown patina and the breech features a gray patina with some case colors visible. The lock plate remains dark as does the buttplate which has wear on the upper and lower edges. The wood is very good with some minor dings, scratches, and marks. Mechanically excellent.
