Description:

This model was the final configuration of trapdoor rifles until the development and fielding of the 1898 Krag rifle. The left rear section of the barrel is marked with the "VP/Eagle Head/P" proof in front of an unclear proof and the receiver with a small "A" proof directly on top of the barrel and an "R" on the bottom left. The breech block is marked "US/MODEL/1884". The lock plate is marked with the spread wing American Eagle and "US/SPRINGFIELD" ahead of the hammer and it is fitted with the correct three click tumbler. This example still retains the two piece trigger guard and the buttplate without a trap. The barrel has the long range adjustable Buffington rear sight with an "R" marked and a blade front sight. It has the correct full length stock that is stamped with a sharp, boxed script "SWP/1886" cartouche on the left side. There is a single circled script "P" proof behind the trigger guard and a "B" sub-inspection mark. The sling swivels are mounted to the front barrel band and the front of the trigger guard. Includes a slotted ramrod.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The rifle retains 90% of the original blue finish and case colors with some light wear at the muzzle, minor marks and scratches on the barrel. Bright polish remains on the front barrel band, with some wear on the lower portion of the rear barrel band. Fiery case colors remain on the tang and breech. The lock plate is partially cloudy but remains dark, and the buttplate and trigger guard have some wear. The re-oiled wood is very fine with some minor dings, marks, and scratches. Mechanically excellent.
