The Model 1877 was manufactured from 1877 to 1879. This serial number dates to 1878. The later 1873 style breechblock is marked "U.S/MODEL/1873"" on top. The barrel has the standard "V/P/Eagle Head/P" on the left with the rear sight marked/graduated "1-5" (100-500 yards) on base with the face of the leaf marked "5-12" (500-1200 yards) both are marked with an "R". The lock plate is marked with the Springfield Armory Eagle/Shield/clutching arrows to the left of "U.S./SPRINGFIELD/1873". The stock has the script "P" behind the lower tang in a circle and the inspector marks "ESA/1877" in an oval cartouche on the left side wrist. The barrel bands are stamped with a "U" on the right side. It features double sling swivels on the front barrel band with a single swivel mounted to the trigger guard, two piece trigger plate and trigger guard bow, smooth buttplate, and iron cleaning rod.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The rifle retains 50% of the original finish with some finish thinning at the muzzle and a mottled golden brown patina on the case hardened breechblock and lock plate. Just in front of the forend cap, there are some zig-zag scratches. There are some overall minor marks, dings, and scratches, a few small areas of oxidation, and some wear on the edges of the buttplate. The sanded and reoiled wood is very good with some minor dents and marks and some chipping at the front of the trigger guard, the bottom of the buttplate, and front of the lock plate with a small crack extending from the rear side plate screw towards the chamber.
