Description:

This is an example of a Springfield Model 1868 Trapdoor Rifle manufactured circa 1869. The top of the breechblock is stamped "1869/Eagle Head/Crossed Arrows/U.S.", the underside of the breechblock is stamped with a sub-inspector "B" proof. The lock plate is marked with the standard marking and is dated "1864". The left side of the barrel and receiver are serial numbered "48759". The barrel is fitted with the original barrel bands marked with a "U", it has a fixed front sight and folding leaf rear sight graduated to 900 yards. Mounted with the full length walnut stock with a "U.S." marked buttplate tang and is fitted with the correct two-piece trigger guard. The left stock flat has the remnant of an oval inspection cartouche. Comes with an original cleaning rod.

Rating Definition:

Very good plus. The barrel and trigger guard have a smooth gray patina. The receiver, breechblock, hammer and lock have been arsenal refinished and retain almost all of the dull blue finish. The reoiled stock is very good with a 3 inch hairline crack on the left rear of the buttstock, and overall some minor nicks and dings. The markings are clear. The action is fine.
