Description:

This is a rare and desirable example of an early manufactured U.S. Springfield Armory Model 1895 Krag carbine without the word "Model" as noted in Brophy's book on the Krag rifles. The carbine is an early variation of the 1896 carbine of which only 1,378 were manufactured. The left side of the receiver is marked with: "1895 U.S. SPRINGFIELD ARMORY 24978", indicating that it falls into the generally accepted, but slightly below the serial number range of the Teddy Roosevelt "Rough Riders" unit carbines. It has the correct carbine length barrel, fitted with a fixed front sight and the Model 1896 rear sight. The rear sight is graduated; 2-6 (200-600 yards) on the side and 7-20 (700-2000 yards) on the face of the leaf with a "C" stamped at the top. It is fitted with an original carbine stock, single barrel band and short 1896 pattern no-hump handguard. The stock is fitted with the Model 1896 saddle ring/sling bar on the left side. It has a faint boxed "JSA/1896" cartouche on the left side with a faint script "P" proof behind the trigger guard. It has a carbine buttplate with a trap door that houses an original U.S. field screwdriver and two-piece cleaning rod, both stored in the buttstock.

Rating Definition:

Good overall with the exposed metal surfaces being mostly a gray patina finish overall. The casehardened components are all silver gray. The stock and handguard are both in good plus condition with an old coat of varnish applied over the wood, with numerous scratches, nicks and dings on the side of the butt area. There is an old, repaired crack through the pistol grip area that was reglued and varnished over. As noted the stock proofs are faint but visible. A solid representative example of a Spanish American War Era U.S. Krag Bolt Action Carbine.
