Barrel: 36 inch round
Finish: blue/casehardened
Grip:

Item Views: 1733
Serial Number:
Catalog Page: 74
Class: Antique
Description:

The State of New York purchased about 15,000 rolling block rifles from Remington in the 1870's. These can be distinguished by the high hammer spur, side protruding breechblock thumb lever, and patented half-cock hammer safety which required the hammer to be fully cocked after loading a cartridge and closing the breechblock. It features a blade front sight and folding rear sight graduated 1-4 on the base and up to 10 on the ladder. The upper tang has the standard three-line markings. It has the correct military style forearm with three retaining bands with a cleaning rod and the straight grip military stock. The barrel has a vertical "V" over horizontal "HP" markings under the rear barrel band on the right side. The left side of the wrist is marked with two illegible cartouches. "69" is marked on the left side of the forearm at the breech and "25" over "17" on the right side of the wrist between the tangs with an unclear cartouche just behind the frame. Most of the components are marked with inspector letters. The top of the comb has an indistinguishable mark. The steel buttplate is marked "37".

Rating Definition:

Fair as cleaned and fitted with a refinished stock. The rifle has an overall aged bright appearance with some scratches, marks, spotting, light pitting, and minor oxidation. The refinished stock has unclear cartouches and some minor dings and scratches as well as a few small dents. Mechanically excellent with clear inspection and patent markings.

Description:

This example may have a cut down round barrel as the front of the barrel is not straight. It is fitted with a blade front and elevation adjustable folding rear sight graduated 1-4 on the base and to 8 on the ladder. The left side of the frame has the 1864, 1872, and 1873 patent dates with the only other markings being small sub-inspection marks and the "U" on the barrel bands. It has an almost full length forend held on by two barrel bands and a straight grip stock with a smooth buttplate. Includes a ramrod/cleaning rod with slotted head.

Rating Definition:

Fair. The rifle has a light brown patina on the barrel and a dark gray-brown patina on the frame. The wood is fine with a dings, scratches, and dents as well as hairline cracks at the junction with the front of the frame on the right, at the junctions with the upper and lower tangs, at the buttplate tang, and minor chips along most of the edges. Mechanically fine with legible patent markings.
