The Model 1873 was manufactured from 1873 to 1877 Breechblock marked "MODEL/1873/Eagle Head/Crossed Arrows/U.S./2(upside down)" on top. The barrel has the standard "V/P/Eagle Head" proofs over a smaller "P" and has rear sight graduated "1-4" (100-400 yards) on base with the face of the leaf marked "5-11" (500-1100 yards). The refinished lock plate is marked with the Springfield Armory "Eagle/Shield/clutching arrows" to the left of "U.S./SPRINGFIELD/1873". Stock has the inspector's cartouche or "P" behind the lower tang and inspector E. S. Allen's "ESA" initials in an oval cartouche on the left side above the trigger. It features sling swivels, two piece trigger plate and trigger guard bow, smooth buttplate, and iron cleaning rod. Includes a leather sling.

Rating Definition:

Very good as arsenal refinished. The barrel, hammer, refinished lock plate, and other components display an aged brown patina. The butt plate has an attractive brown patina with some wear on the upper edge. The breech and tang have a gray patina with some speckling. The stock has a fine cartouche and "P" proof with various minor dings and scratches especially on the sides and bottom of the butt. Mechanically fine.
