Description:

Manufactured from 1886 to 1889. This example is equipped with a Model 1879 rear sight marked "C" mounted on a barrel with "V/P/Eagle head/P" proofs. The blade front sight is mounted on a stud and the action has a three click tumbler. The lock plate is marked with the eagle-shield motif followed by "U.S./SPRINGFIELD" and the low arch breechblock is marked "US/MODEL/1873". The stock has a saddle ring bar with ring and a "U.S." marked buttplate with an empty compartment. Two small holes and a faint impression behind the saddle ring bar indicate a small plate or other piece is absent and "MB" crudely carved into the forend just below the rear sight on the left side.

Rating Definition:

Fair. The rifle retains some of the blue finish on the barrel band, breechblock, and hammer with an otherwise gray-brown patina, some light pitting and various minor dings, scratches, and marks. The lock plate is pitted. The re-oiled wood is very good with some scratches and dings as well as chips and a hairline crack along the edge of the butt. Mechanically fine with clear markings.
