This is one of only 10,001 Rolling Block Rifles manufactured between 1871 and 1872 by Springfield Armory under a royalty agreement with Remington Arms Company. The barrel, barrel bands, forend cap, trigger, hammer, buttplate, rolling block, pivot pins and pivot pin retainer are polished bright. The frame and trigger guard are casehardened. The right side of the casehardened frame is stamped with the eagle/shield motif above "U.S./SPRINGFIELD/1872" with the left side stamped "MODEL 1871". The upper tang has the two line Remington patent date (1864 and 1868) marking and the two barrel bands are marked with the letter "U". It has a blue ladder rear sight graduated to 9 (900 yards) and a bright cleaning rod. Mounted with a smooth walnut forearm and straight grip stock with an oval inspector cartouche on the left side wrist and square cartouches on the right side wrist and behind the lower tang. It has a buttplate stamped "US" on the tang with a 16 stamped just ahead on the butt.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The rifle retains traces of the case colors on the frame with mostly a brown patina. The bright finished metal has a gray/brown patina with oxidation and minor marks. The forearm and stock have some dents, dings, scratches, and marks with rough striations on the forearm on the right side ahead of the rear barrel band and some chips and cuts ahead of the front barrel band. The butt is smooth with some light marks particularly on the lower section. Mechanically fine
