Description:

This extraordinary early production, Serial number 9, Colt Model 1855 Sidehammer revolver with Group 3A features, factory case and accessories. This is the 9th .31 caliber Model 1855 revolver manufactured. It has the distinctive Group 3A features which include: (1) .31 caliber, 3 1/2-inch octagon barrel roll-stamped "+ COLT'S PT.+ ADDRESS COL. COLT+/1855 HARTFORD CT.U.S.A." in two lines with Maltese crosses in the middle and both ends, (2) round loading lever with octagon base, and (3) full fluted cylinder. The address lacks the pointing hand found on .28 caliber barrels. The serial number "9" is stamped on the underside of the barrel and butt. The revolver has the Colt high polish blue finish on the barrel, cylinder and frame. The loading lever, hammer and cylinder base pin are color casehardened. The one-piece walnut grip has a high gloss 'piano' finish. Colt manufactured 1350 Group 3A Model 1855 Sidehammer revolvers; serial number 9 was probably made during the first day of production. The revolver is complete with a factory mahogany case lined with red felt. The case has five compartments and contains: (1) 250 count, green label, tin of Ely percussion caps for Colt Belt and Pocket Pistols, (2) pocket pistol flask with fixed charger embossed on both sides with stars, eagle and shield motif, crossed revolvers and "E PLURIBUS UNUM" ribbon, (3) brass, .31caliber, double cavity bullet mold for conical bullets and round balls stamped "COLTS/PATENT" across the top of the blocks and "R" on the left block face and (4) blued Sidehammer combination screw-driver/adjustment tool. This revolver was formerly part of the Norm Flayderman Collection.

Rating Definition:

Excellent plus. The revolver shows only very limited storage and handling wear and retains 98% plus of the high polish blue finish and fiery case colors. The only significant wear is some minor finish loss on the back of the cylinder. There is one very small chip in the varnish on the right side of the grip. The balance of the grip is in the same near-new condition as the rest of the revolver. The case is in fine condition. The exterior has some scattered handling and storage marks. The red velvet lining is somewhat faded and there are oil stains and small patches of discoloration on the bottom of the case and partitions. The accessories are all in very fine condition. The cap tin has nearly all of the brown lacquer finish intact; the green paper label is complete and in very good condition. The flask is in excellent condition; the body retains nearly all of the brown lacquer finish, the top and charger have 95% or more of the gold plating and the spring has all of the fire blue finish. The brass bullet mold is near-new and has a untouched patina. The combination tool is in excellent condition and retains 95% of the fire blue finish. This exceptional factory cased Group 3A revolver is one of the very best condition Colt Model 1855 Sidehammer Pocket Revolvers extant. The combination of condition, single digit serial number and provenance from the Flayderman Collection would be difficult to improve upon.
