Description:

Cased Colt London Model 1851 Navy revolver manufactured c. 1856. The left side of the revolver grip is hand-stamped: "N.J. JACKSON 1ST ME. REGT.". Research material included with the revolver indicates that Colonel Nathaniel James Jackson of Lewiston, Maine, briefly commanded the 1st Maine Infantry and was subsequently colonel of the 5th Maine Infantry. Jackson was wounded at Gaines Mill in June 1862. He was promoted to Brigadier General on September 24, 1862 and commanded the 2nd Brigade, 2nd Division, 12th Corps. He commanded the 1st Division, 20th Corps, November 1864-April 1865. Samuel Colt returned a large number of London Agency Colt revolvers to the United States in 1860-1861 to meet the demand for weapons created by the Civil War. This revolver is apparently a re-imported London Model 1851 Navy with case and accessories. The revolver has the distinctive London Navy features which include blued steel trigger guard and frame, bordered knurling on the hammer spur, round head frame and barrel screws, large cylinder nipple cut-outs, British "Crown C/P" and "Crown/V" proof and inspection marks on the left side of the barrel lug and on each cylinder chamber and "- ADDRESS COL. COLT LONDON" barrel legend. The cylinder is roll-engraved with the standard Texas Navy battle scene and "COLTS PATENT No" markings. "COLTS/PATENT" is roll-stamped in two lines on the left side of the frame. The full serial number, "40470" is stamped on the loading lever, barrel lug, frame, trigger guard, back strap and cylinder. The partial serial number, "470" is stamped on the arbor pin. The wedge is not serial numbered. The revolver has a high polish blue finish on the barrel. The loading lever, frame and hammer are color casehardened. The one-piece walnut grip is varnished. The oak case has brass reinforcements on the corners and inlaid round brass folding handle. The case is lined with green felt and has six compartments. A label with directions for loading and cleaning Colt pistols is glued to the inside of the lid. The case contains: (1) cleaning rod with steel handle, (2) L-shaped combination screw driver nipple wrench, (3) opened packet of six cartridges for Colt's Belt Pistols, (4) steel bullet mold for round balls and conical bullets, (5) 500 count tin of Eley Bros. percussion caps, (6) bag-shaped powder flask with adjustable charger marked: "JAMES DIXON/& SONS/SHEFFIELD" on the top and (7) leather pouch for Eley Bros. caps containing several lead pistol balls.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The revolver retains 50% of the original London blue on the barrel and 40% of the casehardened finish loading lever, frame and hammer. The cylinder has been lightly cleaned and has a gray patina. At least 90% of the roll engraved cylinder scene remains. The percussion nipples and rear face of the cylinder have moderate flash pitting. The safety pins are battered but intact. The finish on the trigger guard and back strap shows handling wear and has faded to an even gray patina. The grip is in fine overall condition with clear, hand stamped markings. There are numerous shallow dents on the bottom of the grip. The case exterior is in good condition with light scratches and handling marks. The interior lining is in very good condition; the Colt label is stained and torn in several places. The cartridge packet has been opened and one cartridge is missing. The fine bullet mold has about 70% of the blue finish with numerous dents on the sides of the mold body. The cap tin is in fine condition with faded label. The powder flask is in very fine condition and retains a large percentage of the original lacquered and gold plated finish. This is a very good example of a cased London Colt Model 1851 Navy revolver with correct case and accessories.
