Description:

Rare S&W New Model No. 3 with nickel plated finish, "U.S." Property mark on the butt and Henry Nettleton (HN) Ordnance inspection marks on the barrel, cylinder and frame. The two-piece walnut grips are stamped with the date "1878" above an oval "DAL" final inspection mark on the left grip and an oval "HN" sub-inspection mark on the left grip. This revolver is one of 280 S&W No.3 revolvers purchased by Maryland and inspected by the Ordnance Department by special request from the Governor and State Adjutant General. The serial numbers of the Maryland No. 3 revolvers fall between 7126 and 7405, In addition to the Ordnance sub-inspection and final inspection marks, the serial number, "7353" is stamped on the butt, rear face of the cylinder, rear face of the barrel and the bottom of the barrel latch. All of the visible serial numbers match.

Rating Definition:

Fair. The revolver shows wear with moderate to heavy pitting on the barrel, cylinder and frame. Small amounts of the original, nickel-plated finish are present on protected areas of the revolver. The grips are fair with clear "1878" date and "DAL" and "HN" Ordnance final inspection cartouche. The action is tight and functions well. This is a good, representative, example of a rare, State of Maryland, S&W New Model No. 3 Single Action revolver with full Ordnance sub-inspection and final inspection marks.
