Description:

According to the factory records (photocopy of letter included) this revolver was shipped to Shapleigh & Company of St. Louis, Missouri on January 15th,1918, and is noted both as an "extremely late shipment" and "made in .45 S&W". 45 Smith & Wesson, also known as 45 Schofield, was originally introduced for the Model Three Schofield revolver circa 1875, and with minor adjustments became the standard Army cartridge through the service life of both S&W's Schofield and Colt's Cavalry Model. The cartridge went out of style circa 1892, barring a brief revival in the 1900's for the Philippine Insurrection, and while it was an easier shooting round than the 45 Long Colt it never earned any great renown as a target cartridge, making its selection by a private shooter circa 1918 somewhat mysterious and nevertheless extremely rare. Partridge blade front and adjustable "U" notch rear sights, with the one-line address on top of the barrel, S&W logo on the right side of the frame, and matching numbers on the barrel, latch, cylinder and frame. Fitted with a pair of checkered hardwood grips.

Rating Definition:

Fine, with 40% of the original blue finish, showing areas of brown patina, mild spotting and scuffs, bright edge wear and a few small areas of pitting. The top of the rear sight has been filed down slightly. Grips are good, with mild dents. Mechanically very good.
