Description:

Manufactured in 1884. The revolver is decorated with well-executed floral scroll engraving on the barrel sides, frame and cylinder flats with a small wedge on the top and bottom of the back strap. There is a wavy line on the ejector housing and a shell design on the top of the back strap. The style and quality of the engraving indicate that it is probably the work of Louis Daniel Nimschke's shop. The top of the barrel is marked with the two line address and the three line, three patent dates are marked on the left side of the frame. "45 CAL" is marked on the upper left front of the trigger guard. The rear face of the cylinder is marked with an "L", "H" and three punch dots. The matching serial number is marked on the bottom of the frame, trigger guard and back strap. The loading gate is stamped with the assembly number "36?8". Blade front and frame notch rear sights, black powder frame, oval ejector rod head, all nickel finish and fitted with smooth, two piece pearl grips. The accompanying factory letter dated April 8, 1968 verifies the caliber, barrel length, finish as "Blue - Soft" grips as "Not Listed" factory engraved "No" and that it was shipped as 1 of 25 to Schoverling Daly & Gales in New York City on July 2, 1884. The letter also states that "The word "Soft" which appears with the finish indicates, the frame and gate were not case hardened when this arm was shipped from the factory and these parts were left in a soft condition for engraving outside of our factory."

Rating Definition:

Very fine with 60% period New York engraver applied nickel finish remaining. The remaining surfaces have a gray patina with some scattered minor pitting. The pearl grips are good with a small chip on the left heel and a large chip on the right heel. The engraving is crisp and markings remain clear. The action functions, but is missing one of the hammer notches internally. The high quality engraving and pearl grips make this a very attractive and desirable revolver.
