Description:

U.S. Contract Colt Single Action revolver with Colt factory letter and detailed authentication letter by John A. Kopec. The Colt factory letter describes the finish as blue and states that the revolver was delivered to the U.S. Inspector at the Colt Plant on August 14, 1878. The revolver retains traces of a period nickel plated finish and has a one piece walnut grip with oil finish. The Kopec letter states that this is a "Buy-Back" revolver with shortened 5 1/2-inch barrel. The letter notes that the revolver frame was sub-inspected by E. C. Wheeler and is stamped with the "W" sub-inspection mark. It further notes that the frame is not stamped with a "U.S." property mark and that several revolvers inspected by Captain John E. Greer lack the U.S. property mark. The left shoulder of the trigger guard is stamped with the "45 CAL" markings used by Colt on commercial revolvers. The Kopec letter indicates that the caliber marking was added by Colt when the revolver was nickel plated for commercial resale. The letter also states that the ejector head base pin and hammer are replacements. The top of the barrel is roll stamped with the Colt, Third Style "Bold Block Letter" address. The underside of the barrel is stamped with a "P" proof mark and "HN" sub-inspection mark. The left side of the frame is roll stamped with the three line, three patent dates. The trigger guard has the "HN" sub-inspection mark stamped above the serial number. The side of the cylinder is stamped with a "P" proof and "HN" sub-inspection mark. The full serial number "49687" is located on the bottom of the frame, trigger guard and back strap. The partial serial number "9687" is stamped on the underside of the barrel beneath the ejector housing and on the side of the cylinder. Traces of the oval ordnance sub-inspection mark are visible on the lower left side of the grip.

Rating Definition:

Good. The revolver retains traces of the period retailer applied nickel plated finish in protected areas. The balance of the revolver has a silver gray patina with scattered patches of age discoloration. The barrel, frame and cylinder have scattered pitting and numerous handling marks. The initials "W.J.H." have been crudely scratched on the right side of the frame. The grip is good overall with moderate handling wear. The action functions well. The is an interesting and well documented example of a U.S. Contract Colt Single Action Army "Buy-Back" revolver with period shortened barrel, nickel plated finish and unique markings.
