The Colt Lightning was designed as a companion to the popular Colt Single Action Army and is chambered in the same calibers. This example was manufactured in 1886 in the early style without a dust cover and is fitted with a German silver blade front sight and an elevation adjustable rear sporting U-notch sight. It has a full length magazine and a sliding button/lever on the front of the trigger guard that prevents the slide from engaging, Fitted with a straight wrist stock with a bright curved steel buttplate and a multi-point checkered forearm/slide. The top of the barrel ahead of the rear sight is marked with the Hartford address over the 1883 patent dates with the caliber designation at the breech. The left side of the frame is marked with the Rampant Colt and the serial number is marked on the lower tang.

Very fine. The rifle retains 80% plus of the original finish with a high amount of finish retained on the barrel and magazine which have some spots of finish wear and some thinning. The frame has some finish absent and some pitting on the left side and some thinning on the right. The exposed surfaces vary from bright to a brown patina. There are some minor scratches, dings, and marks overall. The buttplate has a clean, nicely aged gray patina with only faint scratches. Finish with most loss on left side where there are some patches of light pitting. The hammer retains dark case colors. The markings are crisp. The refinished wood is very good as the buttstock appears to have been lightly reoiled in the past and there are a couple small cracks at the toe of the butt. The checkering on forend remains crisp with some minor marks. The action is excellent.
