Description:

Manufactured between 1866 to 1873, this example of the Southerner Derringer bears the marking "IMPERFECT" in an arc over the hammer screw on the left side of the frame along with a few dings on the left side near the barrel catch hinge pin and a small void in the brass on the top left side of the hammer notch. These errors, while not obstructing the function of the pistol, do detract from its physical appearance, and some firms were known to have sold pistols like this at significantly below market rate in order to recoup material/man hour costs with a prominent marking both to provide fair warning to the end-user and prevent shady operators from buying them at a cut rate and then flipping them on an uneducated customer for a quick but dirty profit. This practice was abandoned by most firms, due to the potential loss of prestige for putting a low grade product on the market with your name on it. Blade front sight with "SOUTHERNER" on the top barrel flat, "BROWN MF'G CO/NEWBURYPORT, MASS./PAT APR.9 1867." on the left side, checkered hammer, smooth spur trigger and smooth two-piece grips.

Rating Definition:

Very fine with 70% of the bright original high polished blue finish with minor loss due to flaking, areas of brown patina, and mild handling marks. A very fine, attractive mustard yellow patina is showing on the frame. Grips are fine with a few minor dents and a small amount of varnish loss. Mechanically excellent.
