Manufactured from 1850 to 1851, this is a scaled down version of a Mass. Arms Dragoon Model revolver which is also referred to as the Pocket Model with a total production of only around 1,000. The top strap is marked "MASS. ARMS CO./CHICOPEE FALLS" and the lock is marked "WESSON'S & LEAVITT'S PATENT." The cylinder stop plate is marked "WESSON PATENT/AUG 28, 1849" with the rear of the etched cylinder marked "LEAVITT'S PATENT APRIL 29, 1837." There is a broad scroll engraving on the lock, frame and hammer, and floral etching on the cylinder. The serial number is on the front of the frame with "817" on the cylinder and "5" on the arbor pin. Blue barrel and cylinder, silver plated brass trigger guard and back strap, casehardened frame and fitted with two piece walnut grips. The revolver comes in contemporary walnut case with French cut tan lining. The case has a place for the revolver, a flask, bullet mold and cap tin. There is a partially full cap tin in the case.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The metal surfaces have a smooth brown patina with traces of original blue finish in the protected areas of the cylinder. The grip frame and trigger guard retain 70% original age darkened silver plating with finish loss concentrated on the toe of the back strap and edges of the trigger guard. The grips are a bit ill-fitting, however remain very good with 98% original varnish remaining and showing some minor dents and handling marks. The engraving and markings are clear. The action is excellent. The contemporary case is fine.
